Monstropolis is the Monsters, Inc. land coming to Hollywood Studios, on the site of the former Muppets Courtyard. Parts of it open in 2027, which makes it the nearest-term of Disney World’s announced expansions.
The door coaster
The centrepiece was announced back in 2024 and is still under construction, but D23 2026 confirmed what makes it notable.
It will be Disney’s first suspended coaster at any of its parks, and its first with a vertical lift. Suspended means the track is above you and the cars hang beneath, so you swing rather than sit.
Those are two firsts on one ride, which is unusual for Disney and suggests something more intense than the family-friendly Monsters Inc theming implies. No height requirement has been announced.
What else is in the land
- Glob Theater, showing “Welcome to Monstropolis” with Mike and Sulley introducing the monster world.
- Harryhausen’s, the restaurant from the film. It gets an Audio-Animatronic sushi chef, and the menu goes well beyond sushi.
- Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, a pizza location.
- Monsters University Alumni Club, built around the university’s student clubs and its legendary scarers.
- Scareporium, the shop.
That is a lot of dining and retail for one land, which fits Hollywood Studios’ problem: it is a small park with long queues and not enough places to sit.
What is not confirmed
- Which parts open in 2027 and which come later.
- A height requirement for the coaster.
- Whether the coaster is in the 2027 phase at all.
That last point matters. “Portions opening in 2027” is doing real work in Disney’s wording, and it does not guarantee the headline ride is among them.
What it means for a trip now
The Muppets Courtyard area is closed and behind construction walls. Muppet*Vision 3D has gone.
Hollywood Studios is already the park where touring plans matter most, because it has the highest ratio of long queues to available attractions. Losing a courtyard makes that worse until Monstropolis opens.
