Animal Kingdom is the largest Disney theme park in the world by land area, covering 580 acres. It opened in 1998 and combines theme park rides with genuine zoological environments, housing over 2,000 animals representing more than 300 species. It feels different from the other three parks because it is as much about the animals and the natural world as it is about the rides.
Animal Kingdom earns a day on every trip. It holds the attention of very young children better than any other park, because the animals work regardless of age. It is also the park where smart timing matters most, because both the animals and the crowds behave very differently depending on the time of day.

Getting to Animal Kingdom
Animal Kingdom has no monorail or Skyliner access. All guests arrive by bus from Disney Resort hotels or personal vehicles. Bus service is frequent but expect longer travel times from some resort locations. Allow 45 to 60 minutes from door to park entrance, particularly during peak periods.
Park Areas
The Oasis and Discovery Island
The lush entrance area leads to Discovery Island, centred around the 14-story Tree of Life with carvings of more than 300 animal species. The new Zootopia: Better Zoogether! show opened in November 2025 in the Tree of Life Theater. It is a 4D experience featuring Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. Mild enough for young children and a good air-conditioned break.
Pandora: The World of Avatar
A 12-acre land based on the Avatar films, featuring Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey. The bioluminescent theming is most impressive at dusk when the plants and waterfalls glow. If you can, visit Pandora both during the day and in the evening. It feels like two different places.
Africa
Home to Kilimanjaro Safaris and Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Harambe Market offers some of the best quick-service dining in the park, with African-style roasted meats and flavoured drinks. The Africa section is themed as the fictional village of Harambe and the detail is impressive.
Asia
Features Expedition Everest, Kali River Rapids, and the Maharajah Jungle Trek where you can see tigers, Komodo dragons, and fruit bats. Expedition Everest’s queue winds through an elaborately themed Nepalese village that is worth paying attention to rather than just staring at your phone.
DinoLand U.S.A. / Tropical Americas
DinoLand U.S.A. permanently closed in early 2025. DINOSAUR (the ride) closed on 2 February 2025. The entire area is being replaced by Tropical Americas, a new land featuring an Encanto-inspired area called Pueblo Esperanza and a new Indiana Jones attraction using the same ride system as the former DINOSAUR. Expected opening is 2027. Expect construction walls in this area throughout 2026.
Rafiki’s Planet Watch / Bluey’s Wild World
The Conservation Station area has been closed and was transformed into Bluey’s Wild World, which opened on 26 May 2026. Guests will be able to meet Bluey and Bingo, play animal-themed games, and see Australian wildlife. Access is by the Wildlife Express Train from Africa.
Best Rides at Animal Kingdom in 2026
Avatar: Flight of Passage (112cm / 44in minimum). Simulates riding a banshee over the world of Pandora. The sensation of flight is extraordinarily convincing, with wraparound screens and a motorcycle-style vehicle that breathes and moves beneath you. This is one of the top three rides at Disney World. Queues regularly exceed 60 to 90 minutes within the first hour of opening. Buy Lightning Lane Single Pass or arrive at rope drop and head here first.
Expedition Everest (112cm / 44in minimum). The park’s major coaster, featuring a backwards section and a Yeti encounter in the dark. The theming in both the queue and on the ride is excellent. A solid thrill ride that our teenagers rate highly.
Kilimanjaro Safaris (no restriction). A 20-minute open-vehicle safari through 110 acres with lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and hippos. This is one of the best experiences at any Disney park and it has no height restriction. Morning visits provide the most active animals and the best photography light. We always ride it first thing.
Na’vi River Journey (no restriction). A gentle boat ride through the bioluminescent Pandora jungle, ending with an impressive Audio-Animatronic Na’vi shaman. The visuals are beautiful, but it is a short ride. Worth doing once, but not worth a 60-minute wait.
Kali River Rapids (97cm / 38in minimum). A raft ride where you will get wet. How wet depends on where you sit, but assume everyone is getting soaked. Bring a waterproof bag for phones and wallets, or use the free lockers near the entrance.
2026 Updates
Bluey’s Wild World opened on 26 May 2026, replacing Rafiki’s Planet Watch. Meet-and-greets with Bluey and Bingo, animal-themed play areas, and Australian wildlife exhibits.
Zootopia: Better Zoogether! opened November 2025 in the Tree of Life Theater. A 4D show with mild seat effects, suitable for all ages.
DINOSAUR permanently closed 2 February 2025. Being reimagined as an Indiana Jones attraction using the same ride system. Expected to open in 2027 as part of the Tropical Americas expansion.
Tropical Americas (Pueblo Esperanza) is under construction, replacing DinoLand U.S.A. entirely. The new land will feature Encanto-inspired attractions and the Indiana Jones ride. Opening expected 2027.
Animal Viewing Tips
The best animal viewing is in the morning. Animals are most active in the first two hours after opening, before the Florida heat peaks. By midday, many animals seek shade and are less visible.
Kilimanjaro Safaris, Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail, Maharajah Jungle Trek, and the Discovery Island Trails all reward early arrivals with more active animals and better photography light. We always prioritise a morning safari. The difference between an 8:30 AM ride and a 1:00 PM ride is significant in terms of what you see.
Late afternoon (after 4 PM) is a secondary window when temperatures start dropping and some animals become active again. An afternoon Safari ride via standby or Multi Pass is a solid strategy if you missed the morning window.
Where to Eat at Animal Kingdom
Tiffins is the park’s best table-service restaurant, serving African and Asian-inspired seasonal menus. Book in advance. This is one of the best restaurants across all of Disney World, not just this park.
Tusker House Restaurant is a character buffet in Harambe with African-inspired roasted meats and salads. The food quality is above standard theme park character dining. Good for families with young children who want a character experience.
Satu’li Canteen in Pandora is the most popular quick-service option. Avatar-themed rice bowls with your choice of protein. The food is good and the theming inside the restaurant is impressive.
Harambe Market is a collection of African street food stalls with roasted chicken, ribs, and vegetables in outdoor village seating. This is where we usually eat lunch. The food is flavourful and it feels like part of the experience rather than a standard food court.
Yak and Yeti Restaurant serves pan-Asian cuisine in a Himalayan setting. Easier to book than Tiffins and a good alternative if Tiffins is full.
Insider Tips
Arrive early. This park rewards it more than any other. Animals are active, queues are short, and the morning light on the safari is beautiful. If you only get to one park at opening time, make it this one.
Check park hours carefully. Animal Kingdom typically closes at 7 or 8 PM, earlier than the other three parks. Plan accordingly. There is no late-night riding here.
Experience Pandora after dusk. The bioluminescent plants and waterfalls glow in the dark and it is stunning. If the park is open until 8 PM, walk through Pandora in the last hour.
Walk the trails. Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail and Maharajah Jungle Trek are free, self-paced, and have no queues. They are some of the most rewarding experiences at Animal Kingdom and most guests skip them. You will see gorillas, tigers, Komodo dragons, and more. Small children will often spend longer on the Gorilla Falls trail than on any ride in the park.
Bring a waterproof bag for Kali River Rapids. Phones get soaked on this ride. Use the free lockers near the entrance or bring a sealable waterproof bag.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do you need for Animal Kingdom?
One day is enough for most families. Animal Kingdom has fewer rides than Magic Kingdom or EPCOT, and the earlier closing time means a full day covers everything comfortably. If you want to do both a morning safari and an evening visit to see Pandora at dusk, you could split it across two half-days.
Is Animal Kingdom just a zoo?
No. It has world-class rides (Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest are among the best at Disney World), themed lands, dining, and shows alongside its zoological elements. The animal experiences are a major part of the appeal, but there is far more here than a traditional zoo.
What happened to DINOSAUR at Animal Kingdom?
DINOSAUR permanently closed on 2 February 2025. The ride is being reimagined as an Indiana Jones attraction using the same ride system. It will open as part of the new Tropical Americas land, which is replacing the entire DinoLand U.S.A. area. Expected opening is 2027.
Is Flight of Passage worth the long wait?
Yes, but a 90-minute standby wait is hard to justify when Lightning Lane Single Pass costs $12 to $18 on most days. Our own readings put the 8am average at 64 minutes and it holds near that all morning, so the cheap window is the late afternoon: we measured 32 minutes at 6pm. Rope drop is the wrong tool for this particular ride, and Single Pass is the other way past the queue. If your only option is a 90+ minute standby queue in the afternoon, weigh it against what else you could do in that time.
