Animal Kingdom is the outlier. It opens earliest, at 8am, and closes earliest, usually between 6pm and 7pm. A day here is several hours shorter than a day at Magic Kingdom, and planning it like the other parks is how people end up rushing.

Two reasons, and both are structural rather than commercial.
The first is the animals. Kilimanjaro Safaris runs on daylight, and the animals are most active in the cool of the early morning and least visible once the afternoon heat sets in. Opening at 8am is a decision about the animals, not about crowds.
The second is that Animal Kingdom has no regular night-time spectacular to hold people until 9pm. The other three parks close around a show. This one does not, so there is nothing keeping the gates open.
The practical result is that Animal Kingdom is the natural first park of a hopping day. Arrive at 8am, do the headline rides while the queues are short and the animals are out, and hop somewhere else in the afternoon before it closes.
At the other parks, arriving early is about queues. Here it is about queues and the thing you came to see.
Kilimanjaro Safaris at 8.30am and the same ride at 3pm are different attractions. In the morning the animals are moving, feeding and close to the road. In the afternoon a good proportion of them are asleep in shade you cannot see into. The ride is the same at both times of day. The animals are the variable.
Early Theme Park Entry gives guests at Disney resort hotels a 7.30am start. Disney’s Early Entry list for this park covers Flight of Passage, Expedition Everest, Na’vi River Journey and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, and leaves out Kilimanjaro Safaris (checked 13 October 2026).
Avatar Flight of Passage is the busiest ride in the park, and it is the one Animal Kingdom ride sold as a paid Lightning Lane Single Pass instead of being included in Multi Pass. It is also the clearest case on the property where the standard advice costs you time. In our readings from 8 August to 12 October 2026 it averaged 56 minutes at 8am, 47 at 2pm and 33 by 6pm. The queue is worst in the morning because that is when everyone is told to ride it.
That leaves a genuine conflict in the first hour: the safari is best early, and Flight of Passage is only cheap early. Most families cannot do both before the crowd arrives.
Our own wait data has changed our answer here. In our readings from 8 August to 11 October 2026, Kilimanjaro Safaris averaged 50 minutes at 10am against 8 at 6pm, one of the largest swings of any ride we track, and Flight of Passage was busiest through the morning. So rope dropping Pandora and taking the safari mid morning buys you the two most expensive queues of the day.
The version that holds up: take the safari early if you came for the animals and accept the queue as the price, or take it in the last hour and accept that more of them will be asleep in the shade. Then ride Flight of Passage late, when it averages about 40 per cent less than at 8am. The full hour by hour figures are on our best time to ride page.
Animal Kingdom occasionally hosts Extended Evening nights for guests at Disney Deluxe Resorts and Deluxe Villa resorts, which is the one time the park is open in genuine darkness with Pandora’s bioluminescence doing its work.
Disney’s calendar lists them on 20 and 26 October and 9 December 2026 (checked 13 October 2026). Our live Animal Kingdom hours table flags them when they appear.
Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or see all four side by side on the Disney World park hours page.
We check every date and price against Disney’s own listings before publishing, and say so plainly when Disney has not announced something. How we work is set out in our editorial standards.
8am on nearly every day, earlier than the other three parks. Guests at Disney resort hotels can enter at 7.30am through Early Theme Park Entry.
Usually between 6pm and 7pm, the earliest of the four parks. It has no regular night-time show to hold guests later.
Partly the animals, whose activity is tied to daylight and cooler temperatures, and partly the absence of a nightly spectacular. The other three parks close around a show. Animal Kingdom does not have one on most nights.
More than at any other park. Kilimanjaro Safaris in the morning and the same ride at 3pm show you very different amounts of wildlife, because a lot of the animals move into shade you cannot see into once the heat builds.
Yes, and many people do. Because it opens at 8am and closes around 6pm, arriving at opening and hopping to another park after lunch works well. It is the natural first park of a hopping day.
