runDisney puts four race weekends a year through the Walt Disney World parks. You run down Main Street before dawn, through the castle, and past characters posted along the course for photographs.

It is also one of the harder things to actually get into, and that catches people out far more than the running does.

Start here: registration has probably already closed

This is the part most guides bury at the bottom.

General registration for every Walt Disney World race in the 2026-27 season has already passed. Not “closing soon”. Gone.

Race weekend General registration opened Status
Wine & Dine Half Marathon 2026 10 February 2026 Closed
WDW Marathon Weekend 2027 17 March 2026 Closed
Princess Half Marathon 2027 8 June 2026 Closed
Springtime Surprise 2027 7 July 2026 Closed

Registration opens roughly ten months ahead and popular races sell out in hours. If you are planning a trip in the next 12 months, you are almost certainly looking at the 2027-28 season.

What you can still do

  • Club runDisney. Paid membership. The Gold and Platinum levels ($639 and $999 for 2027, according to runDisney) include early registration, usually a week before general. For anything that sells out fast this is the difference between getting in and not.
  • Charity entries. Guaranteed places through official charity partners in exchange for a fundraising commitment. Often the only route once general registration has gone.
  • Plan for the following season. Registration windows sit about ten months before each race, so start watching now for the season after.

Bibs are not transferable. runDisney says race entries are non-refundable and non-transferable, so ignore anyone offering one.

The challenges explained

A challenge means running more than one race across the weekend for an extra medal. They are the reason people book a week off work for a running event.

Dopey Challenge (Marathon Weekend)

All four races on four consecutive days: 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon. 48.6 miles.

You finish with six medals, because you collect one for each race plus the Goofy and the Dopey. It is the flagship, and it books out fastest.

Goofy Challenge (Marathon Weekend)

Half marathon on the Saturday, full marathon on the Sunday. 39.3 miles across two days.

Fairy Tale Challenge (Princess Weekend)

10K on the Saturday, half marathon on the Sunday. Three medals in total.

Two Course Challenge (Wine & Dine)

10K and half marathon, 19.3 miles across the weekend.

Things that surprise first-timers

The start times are brutal. Races begin around 5am, and you are expected in the staging area a couple of hours before that. A 3am alarm is normal. Factor that into which park days sit either side.

Corrals are set by proof of time. Submit a recent race result and you start further forward. Without one you go to the back, which means more congestion and more time spent walking around people.

There is a pace requirement. A 16 minute per mile pace is enforced, measured from when the last runner crosses the start. Stopping for every character photograph is what usually puts people at risk of it, not their fitness.

Character queues cost real time. The photo stops are the point for many runners, but each one can be ten minutes. Decide in advance which ones matter.

Should you build a trip around it?

Race weekends fill the resorts even when the parks themselves look quiet, so on-site rooms go early and rates rise. Book accommodation as soon as you have a bib.

Plan a rest day after a long race rather than a park day. Walking ten miles round Magic Kingdom the morning after a marathon is a way to ruin the rest of the holiday.

General registration has already closed for every Walt Disney World race in the 2026-27 season. Registration opens roughly ten months ahead and popular races sell out within hours. Remaining routes are Gold or Platinum Club runDisney membership, which gives early registration for future seasons, or a charity entry with a fundraising commitment.

What is the Dopey Challenge?

Yes. A 16 minute per mile pace is enforced, timed from when the last runner crosses the start line. Most people who fall foul of it do so by stopping for every character photograph rather than through lack of fitness.

No. Race entries are non-refundable and non-transferable, according to runDisney. Ignore anyone offering to sell a place.
