Hollywood Studios vs Magic Kingdom: Which Park Should You Visit?

Pick Magic Kingdom for children under 10 and a first visit, and Hollywood Studios for teenagers, adults and Star Wars fans. Magic Kingdom has 23 rides, and 16 of them have no minimum height. Hollywood Studios has 9, including Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Magic Kingdom is the heart of Disney World, and Hollywood Studios is where you go if you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a movie. The difference shows in how your family spends the day: what you eat, which rides you manage and who is happiest by evening.

Ride Comparison: Quantity vs Quality

Magic Kingdom has 23 rides. Hollywood Studios has 9. That’s a big difference, and it matters if your group includes small children.

Which rides a small child can actually do

Height limits widen the gap. Of Magic Kingdom’s 23 rides, 16 have no minimum height. At Hollywood Studios, 2 of the 9 do: Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and Toy Story Mania.

Child’s height Magic Kingdom rides (of 23) Hollywood Studios rides (of 9)
Under 81cm (32in) 16 2
81 to 88cm (32 to 34in) 17 3
89 to 96cm (35 to 37in) 18 3
97 to 101cm (38 to 39in) 20 5
102 to 111cm (40 to 43in) 21 8
112 to 121cm (44 to 47in) 22 8
122cm (48in) and over 23 9

Rides only, from Disney’s attraction listings and published height requirements, checked on 10 October 2026. Shows, play areas and character meets are not counted. Our height checker re-checks every ride against Disney each week.

One child will live on Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain. Another will want to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure again and again. A third will want pirates, haunted houses and exactly one roller coaster. Magic Kingdom delivers for all three.

Hollywood Studios doesn’t have that variety. What it has instead is intensity. Rise of the Resistance is one of the best rides at any theme park. The detail, the story integration, the technology. Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is its own universe. Toy Story Land captures the films perfectly. But if you have a five-year-old who loves water rides and a three-year-old who’s still figuring things out, Hollywood Studios will leave you scrambling for options while waiting in long lines.

For thrill-seekers and Star Wars fans, Hollywood Studios is worth a full day. For families with mixed ages, Magic Kingdom makes the day easier because there’s literally something for everyone without 40-minute gaps between attractions your kid can actually ride.

Atmosphere and What You’ll Actually Feel

Magic Kingdom feels like Disney. Cinderella Castle dominates everything. The lands make sense: you walk into Frontierland and it feels like the American West. Fantasyland has that storybook quality. It’s nostalgia mixed with wonder, and it works.

Hollywood Studios feels like a working film lot where Disney adventures happen. It’s less about immersion into a fantasy world and more about stepping into specific properties. Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge is incredible, but it’s almost too perfect. You’re in a Star Wars location. Toy Story Land is Toy Story. You’re not walking through “a land.” You’re walking into movies.

Teenagers generally prefer Hollywood Studios. Younger children tend to prefer Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom is the easier of the two to navigate with children in tow. The crowds feel different too. Magic Kingdom attracts every age group, so it’s packed. Hollywood Studios skews older and attracts more serious theme park enthusiasts, which means some lines move differently.

Character Experiences and Dining

If your kids care about meeting Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, or any of the classic princesses, they’re at Magic Kingdom. Hollywood Studios has Pixar characters and Star Wars characters. This matters more than you’d think if you have kids under eight. Missing a good spot to see Cinderella can flatten a small child’s whole day.

Disney lists about the same number of places to eat at each park: 32 at Magic Kingdom and 31 at Hollywood Studios when we counted on 10 October 2026, leaving out dessert parties and dining packages. The difference is the type. Magic Kingdom leans on character and themed meals, including Cinderella’s Royal Table inside the castle and Be Our Guest. Hollywood Studios has proper bars and lounges, including the Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge, Baseline Tap House and Oga’s Cantina in Galaxy’s Edge. Both parks have forgettable quick service and some excellent spots.

Entertainment and Shows

Magic Kingdom has better fireworks and more parade options. Happily Ever After is a solid show. The parades are well-executed and kid-friendly. Your kids will enjoy them.

Hollywood Studios has fewer options but what they do has more edge to it, alongside family shows such as Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, the Frozen Sing-Along and Beauty and the Beast. The shows are better if you’re a fan of the franchises being shown. If you don’t care about Star Wars or Pixar properties, you’ll miss out on some of the entertainment value.

Time Management: One Day or Two?

Magic Kingdom requires a full day minimum. Two days is better if you have young kids and want to actually enjoy yourself rather than speed-run attractions. You’ll hit the popular rides, eat actual meals, sit down for a character meet and greet, and still leave feeling like you missed things.

Hollywood Studios is tighter. A full efficient day works if you know which rides matter to you. If you’re there for Rise of the Resistance and Galaxy’s Edge, skip everything else and have a great afternoon. If you want to hit multiple lands and enjoy the parks at a human pace, you’ll want that full day.

The best order: Magic Kingdom on day one, Hollywood Studios on day two. Magic Kingdom first because kids are fresher, the park is complex, and you need time. Hollywood Studios second because it’s more compact and even tired kids can find entertainment in the detailed lands and shows.

Which Park Should You Actually Choose?

Pick Magic Kingdom if you have young children, if it’s your first Disney World visit, or if you want the classic Disney experience. You’ll spend your day in multiple themed areas, ride more attractions, and everyone in your family will find something to love. It’s also the park that screams “Disney” loudest. Your kids will remember Cinderella Castle.

Pick Hollywood Studios if you’re visiting without young children, if you have Star Wars fans in your group, or if you want to experience the most technologically advanced rides Disney has built. You’ll have a more focused day. You’ll probably wait in longer lines for fewer attractions, but those attractions will be better. The detail work is on another level.

Pick both if you’re spending 3+ days at Disney World. Honestly, this is the real answer. They’re different enough that you should experience both. Magic Kingdom alone feels incomplete without seeing what Hollywood Studios offers. Hollywood Studios without the context of Magic Kingdom feels specialized.

Practical Tips

Get to Magic Kingdom when it opens. The first hour is noticeably easier for hitting popular attractions before crowds arrive. At Hollywood Studios, Rise of the Resistance is sold as a Lightning Lane Single Pass, separate from Multi Pass, so decide before you go whether it’s worth paying for. Our Lightning Lane guide explains how both work.

Download the Disney app before you go. Check wait times, plan your land visits, and know where you’re going. This matters more at Magic Kingdom because it’s larger, but it saves time at both parks.

Wear good shoes. You’ll walk miles at either park, and Magic Kingdom’s lands are spread out.

Take a midday break at Magic Kingdom if you have young kids. Find a character meal reservation or sit-down restaurant and give everyone a break. Hollywood Studios is compact enough that you might not need this, but it’s still worth considering.

Plan around nighttime entertainment. Magic Kingdom’s evening fireworks and parades are worth staying late for. Hollywood Studios’ evening entertainment is less essential to your visit, so leaving earlier is fine if you’re exhausted.
