Best Time to Ride at Disney World: What Our Wait Readings Show

We record the posted wait for every open ride at Walt Disney World every 30 minutes, around the clock. The table below states its own sample size and date range, and the sample grows every day. The wider findings from that record are set out in our wait times research.

Here is what they say about when to ride.

Where the hour of day matters most

These are the rides where turning up at the right time is worth the most minutes. The bars show the whole operating day, left to right.

Two findings that contradict the standard advice

Outside Magic Kingdom, most rides do what you would expect: quiet at opening, worst around midday, easing off in the evening. Two of the biggest names do the opposite, and both are in Animal Kingdom.

Avatar Flight of Passage is busiest in the morning

In our readings from 8 August to 11 October 2026, Flight of Passage averaged 55 minutes in the 8am hour and 62 at its 11am peak, against 33 by 6pm. The morning is its worst time and the queue falls steadily from midday onwards.

The reason is not mysterious. Everyone is told to rope drop Flight of Passage, so everyone does, and Early Theme Park Entry concentrates the resort guests who arrived first into exactly that queue. By late afternoon the people who came for it have ridden it and gone.

We had written the usual advice on our own Pandora guide before this analysis existed. Our own data disagreed with us, so we changed it.

Kilimanjaro Safaris is a genuine trade-off, not a simple one

The safari shows one of the largest swings of any ride on property: in our readings from 8 August to 11 October 2026 it averaged 50 minutes at 10am against 8 minutes at 6pm. That’s about 42 minutes’ difference for the same ride on the same day.

The standard advice to ride it early is not wrong, though. Animals are more active in the cool of the morning and a good number of them are in shade you cannot see into by mid afternoon. So the morning gets you more animals and a much longer queue, and the last hour gets you a walk-on and a quieter savannah.

Knowing the size of the trade-off is the useful part. Paying those extra 42 minutes for better animal viewing is a reasonable choice. Paying it by accident is not.

Planning which day to go? The same dataset drives our Disney World crowd calendar, which covers how busy each park has been and what Disney’s own published hours say about the next three weeks.

How we measured this, and what it cannot tell you

A collector reads the queue-times.com feed every 30 minutes and stores the posted wait for every open ride. Nothing is estimated and nothing is filled in: when a fetch fails we record a gap.

Three decisions shape the numbers above, and each of them changed the answer.

Times are converted to Orlando local time properly. Readings are stored in UTC. Orlando runs 4 hours behind UTC in summer and 5 in winter, so a fixed offset would quietly shift every hour by one after the clocks change in November.

Shows and walkthroughs are excluded. Thirty of the 107 entries in the feed are stage shows, animal trails, exhibits and single-rider queues that post a wait of zero forever. Averaging those into a park figure understated Hollywood Studios by 18 minutes and Animal Kingdom by 15. A ride is counted here only if it has posted a wait above zero at least once.

Thin hours are not reported. An hour needs at least 12 readings before it appears, so the first and last minutes of an operating day do not produce a figure from two observations.

What this cannot tell you is anything about a particular date. A couple of months from August to October tells you about the shape of a Disney day, which repeats every day, and nothing about March. We publish the daily cycle because the record already holds tens of readings per ride per hour. We do not publish seasonal patterns from the same data, because a weekly pattern repeats only once a week and a seasonal one only once a year, and the sample is nowhere near deep enough for either.

These tables rebuild themselves every day, so the sample behind every number grows.

How to use this on the day

The single most useful habit is to stop treating rope drop as a universal answer. It is worth a great deal at Hollywood Studios, where most big rides climb steeply from opening to a noon peak, and it actively costs you time at Flight of Passage. If you are deciding which park gets your early start, Hollywood Studios vs Magic Kingdom sets the two side by side.

Midday is the worst hour at most rides in EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. Magic Kingdom rides mostly peak between 5pm and 7pm. If you can eat at 11.30am and ride at 1.30pm instead of the reverse, most days get shorter.

The last two hours are consistently the cheapest time to ride, and at Animal Kingdom the drop is dramatic because the park closes early and empties fast.

On the day itself, live wait times beat any average ever published, including ours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of day to ride at Disney World?

For most rides, the first hour after opening and the last two hours before closing. Midday is the worst time at most rides in EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, while Magic Kingdom rides mostly peak between 5pm and 7pm. The exceptions matter though. Avatar Flight of Passage is busiest through the morning, and TRON Lightcycle / Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind both climb through the day and peak in the evening.

Is rope drop worth it at Disney World?

It depends which ride you are rope dropping. At Hollywood Studios it is worth a lot, because the morning queues there are the steepest on property. At Avatar Flight of Passage it costs you: our readings show 55 minutes at 8am against 33 at 6pm, because everyone is told to rope drop it and Early Entry concentrates them into that one queue.

What time is Kilimanjaro Safaris quietest?

The last hour before Animal Kingdom closes. Our readings show 8 minutes at 6pm against 50 at 10am, one of the largest swings of any ride we track. The catch is that animals are more active in the morning, so the quiet hour and the good wildlife hour pull in opposite directions. The trade-off is worth roughly 42 minutes of queueing.

How accurate are these figures?

They are measurements, not predictions: posted waits recorded every 30 minutes in Orlando local time, with shows and single-rider queues excluded and any hour with fewer than 12 readings left out. The table states its own sample size and date range, which grow every day. They describe late summer and early autumn 2026. A ride’s daily shape is fairly stable across seasons but the absolute minutes are not, so read the pattern more confidently than the exact number.

Why don’t you show the best day of the week to visit?

Because this page is about the shape of a single day. Day of week needs more weeks than one page of hourly curves can carry, and we now handle it separately: see our wait times research for the weekend against midweek comparison, with its sample size stated. Hour of day is publishable at this sample size because the daily cycle repeats every day; a weekly pattern repeats once a week, and we would need many months before saying anything about it.
