One-Day Hollywood Studios Itinerary: Master the Toughest Rope Drop
Hollywood Studios has the most intense rope drop experience of all four Disney parks. The attractions are concentrated, the crowds are aggressive, and the strategy matters. Teenagers and younger kids each need a different approach here, depending on your family’s height requirements and tolerance for crowds.
What works: arrive 45 minutes before opening, pick one land to dominate at rope drop, then work methodically through the day using the app and short waits.
The Pre-Opening Strategy: 45 Minutes Early Is Not Optional
Arrive at the gates 45 minutes before official opening. This is not a suggestion. The cast members open the gates early to manage crowds, and the first 90 minutes before 9 AM are worth more than the rest of the entire day combined.
While waiting, open the My Disney Experience app and have your payment method ready. Rise of the Resistance needs a Lightning Lane Single Pass, so buy it as soon as your booking window opens (7 days before check-in if you’re staying at a Disney hotel, otherwise 3 days before your visit, from 7am Eastern). Slinky Dog Dash is on Multi Pass, so book it there. Either one can save you 60 to 90 minutes of standing.
Arriving at regular opening time is the common mistake. It leaves you with one major attraction done by noon. Arriving early changes everything.
Rope Drop Decision: Galaxy’s Edge or Toy Story Land
The moment the gates open, you have two choices. You’re either going to Galaxy’s Edge or Toy Story Land. You can’t dominate both in the first hour. Pick one and commit.
Galaxy’s Edge Strategy (Smugglers Run First)
If you go to Galaxy’s Edge, head directly to Smugglers Run. This motion simulator’s queue builds quickly after opening. You want to experience it in the first 30 minutes. Teenagers tend to love this ride: the queue is beautifully themed with multiple pre-show areas, and the ride itself is a pirate ship simulator that is creative and fun without being too intense.
After Smugglers Run (20 to 25 minutes on ride plus queue at rope drop), move directly to Rise of the Resistance using your Single Pass if you have one, or standby if you’re willing to wait. Rise is the most technologically ambitious attraction Disney has built. It’s two-part ride system with elevators, motion simulation, and trackless technology. Wait times average 80 to 120 minutes by 9 AM, but with a Single Pass, you’re on in 5 to 10 minutes.
Toy Story Land Strategy (Slinky Dog First)
If you go to Toy Story Land instead, run to Slinky Dog Dash. This coaster is scaled for the whole family, 38 inches minimum height. It’s fun, creative, and the theme is excellent. The queue builds fast here, so the earlier you reach it, the shorter your wait.
After Slinky Dog, move to Toy Story Mania. This is a dark ride with interactive shooting targets, similar to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom. By 8:45 AM, the wait will be 30 to 50 minutes, but it moves quickly. You can be through in 45 minutes total from arrival at the land entrance.
The choice depends on the ages in the group. Younger kids (under 10) prefer Toy Story Land. Teenagers prefer Galaxy’s Edge for the intensity and Star Wars theming.
9 AM to 11 AM: Tower of Terror and Quick Hits
By 9 AM, you’ve experienced either Galaxy’s Edge or Toy Story Land. Now head to Twilight Zone Tower of Terror on Sunset Boulevard. The wait will be 40 to 60 minutes, but it’s worth it. 40-inch height requirement. It’s a drop tower inside a haunted hotel, with a short Twilight Zone pre-show in the library before you board. It’s theatrical, creepy, and one of the best thrill rides at Walt Disney World.
Use the Lightning Lane if available.
After Tower of Terror, pick up shorter attractions while waits are still building: Star Tours (a 3D flight simulator, usually a 20 to 30-minute wait at this time) and Walt Disney Presents, a gallery and film about Walt Disney’s life that also hosts Ariel’s meet-and-greet, according to Disney.
11 AM to 1 PM: The Other Land and Lunch
By 11 AM, head to whichever land you skipped at rope drop (Galaxy’s Edge or Toy Story Land). If you did Galaxy’s Edge in the morning, do Toy Story Land now. If you did Toy Story Land in the morning, do Galaxy’s Edge now. The waits will have normalized to 30 to 50 minutes instead of 60 to 90.
Lunch is critical at this park because the food is actually good. Woody’s Lunch Box in Toy Story Land serves incredible toasted sandwiches (the Totchos are famous). Docking Bay 7 in Galaxy’s Edge serves themed hot meals, and Ronto Roasters nearby serves the Ronto Wrap. Lunch and a Re-Energizer at 11:30 AM beats eating at 1 PM when crowds have peaked.
Mobile order both meals the night before if possible. Leaving it late can mean 20 minutes in a mobile order pickup line.
1 PM to 4 PM: Shows, Indiana Jones, and Single Rider Lines
The Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! runs several times a day, with the first show at 10.45am on 13 October 2026, according to Disney. Check the app. This is a 30-minute live stunt spectacular that’s pure entertainment. It’s not a theme park ride, it’s a stage show with fire, pyrotechnics, and acrobats performing Indiana Jones stunts. Teenagers rate it highly. Younger kids (under 8) sometimes find it too loud.
Between shows, use single rider lines on anything you haven’t experienced. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets reopened on 26 May 2026, so it is available and worth a single rider queue. If you’ve missed attractions, now’s the time to catch them without waiting excessive time.
By 3 PM, check the app for Fantasmic show times. If there’s an evening show and you want to see it, grab dinner now. If not, you can eat later when park hours extend into the evening.
4 PM to Close: Waits Drop, Re-rides, and Evening Magic
Between 4 PM and 6 PM, the park loses families with young kids heading back to hotels. Waits drop significantly. Use this time to re-ride your favorite attraction or catch something you missed. Slinky Dog Dash at 5 PM has a 15 to 20-minute wait instead of the 60-minute wait it had at rope drop.
After 6 PM, new crowds arrive for dinner and evening entertainment. But between 4 PM and 6 PM, you have breathing room.
The park is small compared to other Disney parks. Walking distances between lands are short. You can experience attractions quickly, and the concentration of high-capacity rides means you can do 8 to 12 major attractions in a single day if you move efficiently.
Fantasmic and Evening Entertainment
If Fantasmic runs that evening, watch it from the amphitheatre off Sunset Boulevard. Disney lets you arrive up to 90 minutes before each show. It’s a show of about 30 minutes with pyrotechnics, projection mapping, and theater magic. It’s worth 30 to 45 minutes of your time.
If an evening show is running, plan to see it instead of pushing to fit in one more attraction. The shows at Hollywood Studios are high quality and worth prioritizing over a 50-minute wait for something you’ve already experienced.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Closure and 2026 Updates
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster closed on 2 March 2026 for a Muppets retheme and reopened on 26 May 2026. This frees up some time in your day or forces you to skip one thing and do something else instead.
Animation Courtyard is fully open again. Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! started on 26 May 2026, and The Magic of Disney Animation (with Olaf Draws!, Off the Page! character meets and the Drawn to Wonderland playground) opened on 14 September 2026. Both are good mid-day stops with young children. MuppetVision 3D closed for good in June 2025.
Everything else in the park is operating normally. Star Tours, Tower of Terror, Smugglers Run, Rise of the Resistance, Slinky Dog Dash, and Toy Story Mania are your anchor attractions.
What Works Differently With Different Ages
With teenagers, the strategy is aggressive: rope drop Galaxy’s Edge, hit both coasters early, do single rider lines for everything, skip the character areas, and prioritise adrenaline and thrills.
With younger kids (5 to 8 years old), the strategy changes: rope drop Toy Story Land, do Slinky Dog Dash and Toy Story Mania, take a long lunch break in the afternoon, catch a show, and end with a re-ride on something they loved instead of pushing to fit in one more thing.
With a mixed-age family (teenagers and a 6-year-old), it helps to split up: one parent takes the teenager to single rider lines while the other parent does height-restricted attractions with the younger child, then everyone meets up for shows and meals.
Hollywood Studios is small enough that you can do all of this in one day. You can’t do it casually, but you can do it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is one day enough at Hollywood Studios?
One day works if you rope drop and use Lightning Lane. You'll do all major rides except potentially one of the Star Wars rides during standby.
What's the rope drop strategy for Hollywood Studios?
Pick one land. In Galaxy’s Edge, start with Smugglers Run and use a Single Pass for Rise of the Resistance. Then Slinky Dog Dash. Then Smugglers Run or Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway depending on your party.
Should I buy Lightning Lane for a one-day Hollywood Studios visit?
Yes. Hollywood Studios has the highest Lightning Lane value of any Disney World park because the major rides build queues fast.
Can I do both Star Wars rides in one day?
Yes if you do Rise of the Resistance at rope drop and Smugglers Run via Lightning Lane (or vice versa).
What time does Hollywood Studios close?
Usually 9pm or 9.30pm, tracking the night-time show, and later during the peak weeks around Christmas and Easter. On Disney After Hours and Jollywood Nights dates it closes early to day guests. Our live Hollywood Studios hours page carries the actual time for each day.
