Updated May 2026: Big Thunder reopens with new track, new trains, and a day-one fire incident

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened on 3 May 2026 after sixteen months closed. The work was structural. Every section of track has been replaced. New trains. Refreshed sets and figures. New lighting and effects through the Rainbow Caverns scene, the indoor section midway through the ride.

The Rainbow Caverns sequence is the one most worth noticing. The lift hill carries you into the cavern, lit by the new rainbow lighting. Then it flips to red and bats sweep through.

Disney rebuilt the track and refreshed the trains. The old track had been showing its age. The ride profile is the same. Same drops, same speeds, same general layout. If you loved the old Big Thunder you’ll love this one. Disney has kept the bones intact.

A small fire on opening day

Around 5:45pm on 3 May 2026, the same day the ride reopened, a small fire was reported in the loading and unloading area. A cast member dealt with it using a handheld extinguisher. Nobody was hurt. Disney has not put out a statement on what caused it. The ride was offline briefly that evening and was operating normally the next morning.

A fault like this usually closes a ride for a few hours. If you see Big Thunder showing “Temporarily Closed” in the My Disney Experience app, check back in 30 to 60 minutes.

Is it worth riding now?

Yes if you’re a Big Thunder fan and a coaster geek. The first month back is the cleanest the ride will look for years. Fresh paint, fresh effects, no scuff marks on the trains yet.

Crowds were heavy in the first weeks after the reopening. Lightning Lane Multi Pass includes Big Thunder, so use it if your day allows.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: Open Again After a Sixteen-Month Rebuild

Open, and the Height Limit Has Dropped

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened on 3 May 2026 after closing in January 2025. The headline change for families is the height requirement: it fell from 40in to 38in (97cm), which Disney put down to a safety review alongside the new track and refreshed trains.

That puts it level with Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, so a child who has managed that can now ride this too.

Expect queues. It is one of the most popular coasters at Magic Kingdom and the rebuild has drawn people back.

What’s Changing in the Refurbishment

The track layout has remained essentially unchanged since the attraction opened in 1980. What’s being added is entirely new experiences within that existing structure. The updated version adds a new Rainbow Caverns scene with glowing pools and new lighting, plus refreshed Audio-Animatronics, according to Disney.

The core coaster experience remains the same. No inversions. No dramatic angles. But the theming and storytelling have been modernized substantially. Children riding it now get something fresh on the same fundamental coaster track their parents may have ridden years ago.

Coaster Details and Thrill Level

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a mine train coaster themed to a haunted gold mine in the American Southwest. The ride lasts approximately 3.5 minutes. The height requirement is 97cm (38 inches), according to Disney. No inversions means no upside-down moments. The train moves fast but predictably. It’s a moderate thrill, not extreme.

This is the best starter coaster at Magic Kingdom for kids graduating from gentler attractions. From Big Thunder, the usual next step is Space Mountain, then TRON. Big Thunder works as a confidence builder for children who’ve outgrown rides like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train but aren’t quite ready for the intensity of a full coaster.

The queue environment is elaborate. Mining equipment, themed structures, and detailed set dressing make the wait entertaining even if waits are long (expect longer queues post-reopening).

How to ride it

Big Thunder Mountain is the standard stepping stone to more intense coasters. The moderate thrill, lack of inversions and clear mining theme make it approachable. Success on Big Thunder builds confidence for Space Mountain (a darker coaster but longer and more intense) and then TRON (which is faster and more relentless).

This progression is worth planning. Don’t skip Big Thunder if your child is uncertain about coasters. Ride it, build confidence, then tackle the next level. The refurbishment improvements may actually make it an even more engaging first coaster experience.

Lightning Lane and Crowds

Lightning Lane Multi Pass is available for Big Thunder Mountain. Waits were high after the 3 May 2026 reopening. From 8 August to 12 October 2026 our readings averaged 36 minutes at the busiest hour (6pm). A Multi Pass selection for Big Thunder is worth it while that lasts. Waits should settle as the newness wears off.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does Big Thunder Mountain compare to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train? Seven Dwarfs is slower, gentler, and focuses on animation and theming over coaster sensation. Where it fits in a Magic Kingdom day

Ride it after dark if you possibly can. The layout is the same either way, but the lighting through the canyon and the sense of speed you get without a horizon make the night ride a noticeably better one. It is the clearest example in the park of a ride that changes character after sunset.

The height drop from 102cm to 97cm, which came in when the ride reopened in May 2026, matters more than five centimetres sounds. It brings Big Thunder into line with Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, so a child who clears one now clears both, and that opens up a Frontierland and Fantasyland pairing that used to be split.

Waits build from late morning and stay moderate, averaging 30 to 36 minutes from 11am to 7pm in our readings (8 August to 12 October 2026). The shortest waits in our readings came in the 8am hour, averaging 9 minutes, and again late in the evening.
